Fuer die Westberliner ging es von hier durch die DDR nach Hamburg und Schweden. Es musste ein Visum beantragt werden und die Reisezeit war begrenzt, damit nicht jemand in der DDR unrechte Dinge tat. Fussgaenger kommen aus der DDR nach Spandau

The east german border guards could refuse to give one without a comment. The travellers had to pass East Germany in a certain time. Everyone had to pay a fee. It was forbidden to leave the road or to contact an east german citizen. At the other side of the country all data were controlled at a similar checkpoint. Only by air an uncontrolled visit was possible. These controls lasted for 40 years. This checkpoint was called Staaken. |
